Scaling and root planing is a periodontal cleaning which requires going under the gums to remove plaque, tarter and calculus from the root surface of the tooth. These substances stuck on the root surfaces of the teeth illicit an inflammatory response from the body leading to bleeding gums and bone loss. Scaling and root planing is performed with local anesthetic administered by Dr. Michael followed by scaling and root planing completed by the registered dental hygienist. This treatment is intended for patients with early periodontal disease or gingivitis. Patients with moderate to advanced periodontal disease usually require the Dr. Michael to perform laser assisted scaling and root planing. With proper dental hygiene and routine dental care following scaling and root planing, gums become firm, pink and resist bleeding during brushing or flossing. This firmer, healthier tissue in turn resists bacteria from gaining access to the body through the gums – your heart is only as healthy as your gums!
