depending on the severity of the gum disease. The procedure consists of two steps that take place at the same appointment. First, the laser is used to remove infected tissue and bacteria in or around the dental pocket. The second step is to remove the plaque and debris from the root surface – also knows as tarter or calculus. The removal of this very hard substance is achieved with an ultra sonic scaler and hand scaling of the root surfaces by the doctor, dental hygienist or both. After all of the tarter and infected gum tissue have been treated and new layer of healthy tissue forms with in 7-10 days. A regimen of oral hygiene instructions are given including; floss, inter-dental brushes and an electric toothbrush. A supportive periodontal cleaning is recommended in 3 months following a laser dental cleaning to evaluate the healing of the tissue and to review oral hygiene.
